Going into the final round of matches activitymix Granite Guerillas needed a win over Genesis to  seal a league championship. As it turned out there was a slightly anti-climactic end to a long campaign as with Genesis only being able to field 4 players the game was conceded and a friendly played instead. However a win is a win and this means the team remained unbeaten through 10 league games, bringing to an end a 7 year Surf Rescue / Meerkats title run. (more…)

Busy week for Guerillas

Wednesday 1st June sees the start of the mens(/womens) league in Aberdeen and will be a busy week of games for the Guerillas. With our mens team joining the three mixed teams in action this means as a club we’ll be playing 8 games of touch this Wednesday night and covering 5 referee allocations. In total 40 players are expected to pull on a Guerillas shirt this evening, which will be a new record for the club.

For the mixed teams this week’s games are all at the cup pool stages. Teams are organised into 4 pools of 6 and placings in each pool will decide which of the knock-out events each team ends up in. So a chance to play games against some teams that we wouldn’t normally come up against. Our mens team face one of the the womens ‘all star’ teams and also perennial rivals for the title Aberdeenshire RFC Blokes. Here’s hoping the campaign for a ninth successive title gets off to a good start.

After the league and cup games are completed thoughts will turn to the weekend when a squad of 14 will head to Stirling for the 1st of the 4 Scottish Touch Series (STS) events. Guerillas finished 4th in this series last year, one place higher than in 2009. We know it will need a series of exceptional performances to stay top 5 yet again, as the standard of these events goes up each year. Some of our first choice players will be unavailable due to the Scotland Womens Open team taking part in a tournament in London at the same time as part of their Touch World Cup preparations. However with strength in depth we are confident others can step up. Stirling is also points scoring event 3 of 7 in the Aberdeen Touch Series (ATS) with Leopards, Hoodlums and Tigers all travelling from Aberdeen and looking to pick up valuable ATS points.

Week 1 League Round Up

Posted: May 5, 2011 by guerillastrc in League

Round up of the Guerillas scores from the first week of summer league action below. Galactics have managed to hit the ground running with a close win over BP, a team that was playing in the Experienced league last year. They followed this up with a 5-0 win over Shell. Quite a surprising result given these two teams finished only 2 points apart in the league last year.

There seems to be some doubt as to whether the correct number of scores were recorded in the Urban’s second game, as the Guerillas team believe they scored 4! These things sometimes happen. The first run out for this new team was against a club that will probably be challenging for the title in the Int B division. But we can expect improvements to come each week with this new group of players.

Granites picked up the pace in the second half of the Touching Cloth game to run in a few more scores. The second win certainly was one to be pleased with, handing the reigning league champions their first defeat for sometime. Despite some off-season additions it was a depleted Meerkats team, although Granites were also missing some of our most experienced players. Hats off to Meerkats though for running hard the whole game. Week 2 sees Granites v Leopards plus Leopards vs Meerkats so should be an interesting one.

Granites v Touching Cloth WON 8-1

Urbans v Tigers LOST 0-3

Galactics v BP WON 5-3

Galactics v Shell WON 5-0

Urbans v Marathon DRAW 3-3

Granites v Meerkats WON 2-0
