Saturday 12th July saw the annual Aberdeen leg of the Scottish Touch Series take place at Woodside Sports Complex with 18 teams from around Scotland competing. The final saw Six Pack beat Hoodlums to claim the cup but the biggest event of the day was undoubtedly the grand reveal of the new Guerillas ‘home’ strips.

Guerillas are currently training on Monday evenings and the Aberdeen autumn league starts on Wednesday 30th July.

Saturday 4th August 2012 will be remembered for many golden moments. But while the mens coxless fours, Copeland and Hosking and the womens cycling team pursuit all made their mark in sporting history 400 miles to the north a group of girls from Aberdeen were writing their own names into the record books.

After several years of Edinburgh dominance the Aberdeen women had captured the national title for the first time ever in 2011. Close to half the 2012 squad were part of that team but they were joined by several girls playing at this level for the first time in their touch careers.

Ahead of the event the decision was made to take the maximum permitted squad of 16 girls to the tournament. This was in part prompted by what was going to be a gruelling schedule of games with up to 175 minutes of touch to be played in one day. A late withdrawal of Edinburgh Ice due to lack of players meant one game less, but with a lot of flexibility offered by the selected players the large squad gave the coaches plenty of options to keep legs fresh for the later stages. All set for Scotland’s biggest touch event

This Saturday 28th July 32 corporate teams will gather at Aberdeen’s Woodside Sports Complex for the Activitymix Decathlon Touch Rugby event. This will be the biggest 1-day tournament in Scotland this year with teams battling through pool stages then into up to three rounds of knock-outs for the honour of being declared 2012 champions.

The teams taking part reads as a who’s who of Aberdeen companies. Larger companies are in League 1, and those with fewer employees in League 2; full list below.

The last few league 1 finals have been played between Genesis and Wood Group with both teams having had their hands on the trophy. However with no Genesis this year the grand final will have a different look. Shell and BP have a strong record in the event and have also had mixed and mens teams competing in the 10 week Aberdeen summer touch league. (more…)

Unofficial STS & ATS update

No official update on the ATS & STS scores yet but by my reckoning the current STS table is as below after 3 of 4 events. As you can see our 2011 points total after 3 events almost eclipses our final total from 4 events last year. So a massive step up in performances. In Glasgow we cut down the gap to Meerkats and WM ahead of us, such that it is just feasible we could catch one of both of them in Edinburgh, and we’ve increased the gap ahead of Superhands to 16 points.
2011 Standings
1st Geckos 84
2nd Meerkats 74
3rd Wallace Monumentals 72
4th activitymix Guerillas 68
5th Superhands 52

STS Round 3 – Glasgow Open

Event write-up by Monica Coyle…

This was round 3 of the Scottish touch series, in Glasgow this time. The draw had been sent out, and the standard was looking high, such that despite always being optimistic, I wasn’t sure top 4 was achievable on this one – apologies team! We had a squad of 10, which meant we were going to be tired by the end of the day!

Guerillas camping it up at Stirling STS

Our report on the Guerillas trip to Stirling for the first of the 2011 STS events comes courtesy of Duncan Smart…

I’d like to start by staying a massive congratulations to everyone who came down to Stirling at the weekend, and led activitymix Guerillas to one of their best ever ‘away’ Scottish Touch Series results. A big pat on the back also to Stuart and Nick who played for Hoodlums and helped them win some silverware. Of course it’s always good to see any Aberdeen teams performing well but the fact they beat Leopards in the final didn’t do our ATS campaign any harm!

Anyway, to the action…
We started off in a group with Flossie Possie (aka Stirling B), Hammertime (from Glasgow) and Superhands (Edinburgh), who we seem to be drawn with in every tournament. Historically we have gotten off to a pretty slow start in some of the one day tournaments, but thankfully not this time. We hit the ground running, and rattled up a convincing 7-1 victory, with scores from Scuba (3), Ross (2), Mon and Dave.

Busy week for Guerillas

Wednesday 1st June sees the start of the mens(/womens) league in Aberdeen and will be a busy week of games for the Guerillas. With our mens team joining the three mixed teams in action this means as a club we’ll be playing 8 games of touch this Wednesday night and covering 5 referee allocations. In total 40 players are expected to pull on a Guerillas shirt this evening, which will be a new record for the club.

For the mixed teams this week’s games are all at the cup pool stages. Teams are organised into 4 pools of 6 and placings in each pool will decide which of the knock-out events each team ends up in. So a chance to play games against some teams that we wouldn’t normally come up against. Our mens team face one of the the womens ‘all star’ teams and also perennial rivals for the title Aberdeenshire RFC Blokes. Here’s hoping the campaign for a ninth successive title gets off to a good start.

After the league and cup games are completed thoughts will turn to the weekend when a squad of 14 will head to Stirling for the 1st of the 4 Scottish Touch Series (STS) events. Guerillas finished 4th in this series last year, one place higher than in 2009. We know it will need a series of exceptional performances to stay top 5 yet again, as the standard of these events goes up each year. Some of our first choice players will be unavailable due to the Scotland Womens Open team taking part in a tournament in London at the same time as part of their Touch World Cup preparations. However with strength in depth we are confident others can step up. Stirling is also points scoring event 3 of 7 in the Aberdeen Touch Series (ATS) with Leopards, Hoodlums and Tigers all travelling from Aberdeen and looking to pick up valuable ATS points.

On Saturday 7th May two Guerillas teams gathered at Woodside for the Aberdeen Spring tournament. The activitymix Guerillas (the ‘A’ team) were looking to bag as many points as possible to add to our Aberdeen Touch Series (ATS) total and we also had enough players for a full second squad of activitymix Guerillas Killer Bees.

Of note for this event was the rise of the clubs, with half the teams taking part coming from just four clubs. Superhands and Leopards have been able to turn out two teams to a number of recent events. However this was also the first away tournament that Stirling Touch has sent two teams to and Guerillas registered two teams in a weekend tournament for the first time in some time.

The ‘A’ team’s first game was against Superhands Academy. The method by which Superhands split their players between their two teams is always a mystery,  although there was speculation that their constitution mandates a minimum number of French speakers in each team. As it was the Academy team featured some of the more experienced players as the spine of the team, along with some newer faces. (more…)

Six Pack – 9 April 2011

A team of Guerillas, supplemented by a couple of Leopards and Hoodlum made their way to Edinburgh for the Six Pack tournament earlier this month. The sun was shining all day for a great introduction to competitive matches for three of our new players – Michelle, Mike and Euan.

The draw was tough, as expected, with the following results in the group stages:

Lost to Six Pack 2-6
Beat Glasgow Lions A
4-2 Lost Meerkats 1-4
Lost Scotland MXO 0-5
Beat Stirling 4-2
Beat Superhands Sinister 5-0

Strong performances against strong teams – we worked hard defensively kept the scores against us low. The Mixed Open team even had to resort to mooning Mark to try to get a score in, so a very happy captain after those results.

That earned us 4th place in our group and a place in the plate semi where we faced Superhands Dexter (points to anyone that can tell us the significance of their A & B team names – thanks to Ali Crozier for explaining this one!). Sadly this was the end of our run as they beat us 6-0.

The overall winners were the hosts, beating Scotland MXO in a drop-off in the cup final. Meerkats beat Superhands A in the Plate Final, so I think we can be quite pleased with our group performance!

The semi wasn’t the end of the day for us, however, as not only was it beer o’clock, but we also had the glory of the passing skills competition and the race for a case to come and I am pleased to report that the Guerillas excelled here. Even following a pint and a double gin, Jen still managed to come second in the women’s passing place – earning us a classy bottle of pink lambrini! Dave Vale (looking very comfortable in a Guerillas top once again) also managed the same in the men’s competion. Ross Taylor, who has recently decided to join us was the winner here – so we’ll be looking for a clean sweep next year!

Senga and Mark “volunteered” to represent us in the race for a case – sadly Senga was outrun, but Mr Tickle did us proud and (despite Superhand’s protestations) was the winner of the men’s race. He was delighted to declare himself the fastest man in Scottish touch, despite taking a knock in the first match which resulted in a swollen kidney and a trip to A&E….

Special mention to Michelle, who got the first score in our first match against Superhands. No mean feat – particularly as it was her first competitive match as a Guerilla. Mike also stepped up with two scores of his own.

A big thanks to Six Pack for organising a great day of touch, and to Dave, Ali and Christie for joining us. Also a big well done to the team, particularly our newbies for a strong performance. Here’s to the Aberdeen Spring Tournament in May!
