Guerillas secure Aberdeen’s top two league titles

Going into the final round of matches activitymix Granite Guerillas needed a win over Genesis to  seal a league championship. As it turned out there was a slightly anti-climactic end to a long campaign as with Genesis only being able to field 4 players the game was conceded and a friendly played instead. However a win is a win and this means the team remained unbeaten through 10 league games, bringing to an end a 7 year Surf Rescue / Meerkats title run.

Our mens team had two league games remaining, one against a Shirt Colts team that had suffered only one defeat thus far, and the final game against Girls R Loud. Both resulted in convincing wins and so a 9th consecutive mens league title was secured.

Some excellent results in recent weeks have seen the activitymix Galactic Guerillas move up the Intermediate A table. Prior to the final game they sat in 2nd place with a gap to Shell in 3rd. A 2-1 win over Untouchables made sure of this and so they rank 8th overall in the Aberdeen leagues, an improvement of 4 places from last season.

activitymix Galactic Guerillas started the night in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the Intermediate B league, although 4th place on touchdown difference. They did all they could to move up with a win over NHS.  The other league results are not yet official but going on past form is seems likely that a Tigers win over KCA and a Subsea Sharks victory over Marathon would result in 3rd place for Urbans. Still an excellent result to finish top half of an Intermediate league for what is a team mainly made up of novices.

With league duties completed in the first round of games attention turned to the knock-out round of the cups for the mixed teams. For the third year in a row activitymix Granite Guerillas faced Meerkats in the Cup semi-final. With both teams apparently suffering from a massive World Cup hangover this was not quite the game it could have been. With the teams deadlocked at 2-2 as the hooter went we moved into a drop off. Shortly after dropping to 4-a-side we made a break and a quick interchange of passes led to the winning score.  So on to a cup final next week for the first time in a long time, with a game against Leopards.

Urbans completed a pair of wins with a friendly victory over KCA. This left the last game of the night as the Quaich semi-final between activitymix Galactic Guerillas and Marathon (both runners-up in their cup qualification pools). Marathon drew first blood and the game remained close most of the way through. However Galactics came more into it as the game went on and a well judged dive by Duncan provided the final score in a 4-2 win. The final next week will be against Subsea Sharks or Touching Cloth.

The mens cup starts and finishes next week with up to 3 games for teams that make finals. We’ll start with a quarter-final vs Girls R Loud.

So all in all a fantastic week for Guerillas. Although several players came out of the World Cup with injury concerns and fatigued legs we still managed a good turn out and recorded 8 wins in 8 games – a club record!
