Guerillas will have 10 regular club members taking part in the Touch World Cup next week. Additionally Ewan McKenzie, who plays his mixed touch for Genesis but joins us for mens team games, will be playing M30 in Edinburgh after making his debut last year. This is an illustration of how far the club has come since the last WC where we had a single representative (albeit in a reduced number of Scotland teams). Our national representatives are a mixture of new caps and old hands:

Dave Matthews will be our oldest rep player. Having played M35 at three consecutive international tournaments Dave will, along with several of his 2010 team-mates, make the move up into Scotland’s newly-formed M40 for this WC.

Neil Fraser’s first involvement as an international player was in M30 in Paris in 2008. He has been a fixture in Scotland teams since and will take to the field in Edinburgh next week as the captain of the M35 team.

Iain Craik was one of the club’s first two international reps, along with Jenny Davidson, at the Euros in Jersey in 2004. Iain has been in and out of the squads over the past few years as family commitments have allowed and the M35 at WC11 will be the 4th category he has taken part in over the last 8 years. Iain is the only club member with previous World Cup experience having played X30 in Stellenbosch.

WC11 will see Paul Smith taking part in his 3rd different playing category having previously represented at MO & M30, and now M35. The triumvirate of Paul, Neil and Iain in the M35 will be an interesting combination to watch.

Male players: Iain Craik, Paul Smith, Simon Walker, Mark Chiverton

Neil Fraser, Ross Taylor, Ewan McKenzie,  Dave Matthews

Monica Coyle also made her debut in Paris in the W30. She travelled with that team to win the Mainland Cup in 2009 and moved to XO for Bristol last year. 2011 sees her return to a much changed W30 team that has already had success this year and will be looking forward the three games against the auld enemy in Edinburgh.

This World Cup will be Senga Derrick’s second international appearance after starting in the 2009 XO at the Home Nations in Glasgow. After missing out on a playing place in 2010 Senga quickly put the disappointment behind her and channeled her energies into refereeing, being recognised as the Most Improved referee at last year’s Euros.

Fiona Gray first broke into the WO team in 2009. Having battled through injuries to just about every part of her body over recent years we are all looking forward to seeing a fully fit Fee take to the field in Edinburgh.

Female players:  Monica Coyle, Fiona Gray, Senga Derrick

Simon Walker and Mark Chiverton make their debuts together in the M30 team. Both have developed massively as touch players over the last couple of years and their athleticism will bring a lot to the team. Ross Taylor is the most recent addition to the Guerillas fold and our youngest ever international player (a trend we hope to continue!). He will be playing XO at the World Cup in Edinburgh, a venue familiar to him as an Edinburgh Uni student.

Best of luck to all the Guerillas at the World Cup. And also a massive thank you to the friends, family and other club members who have supported them over the last few months as they’ve worked towards the biggest few days in their international careers – we wouldn’t be there without you!
